Boycott

Shila Amzah was criticized, threatened, insulted and even asked to leave China as part of the fallout from the MH370 aviation disaster. A majority of the passengers on the aircraft were Chinese nationals and hence some of the country's anger over the loss of their people were directed at Shila because she was Malaysian. Shila was not the only Malaysian to receive this kind of treatment as other Malaysian Chinese artists were also turned into punching bags online. Fortunately, some of Shila’s fan stood behind her and backed the singer up. "She is a singer, not related with aircraft. She cannot represent the Malaysian government!" said one of her fans.

Controversy

2014: Shila Amzah <Love> Live in Malaysia defamation

She was accused by Malay media of not inviting Malay media to cover the concert, which the concert promoters Mega Ultimate refuted with screenshots of their e-mailed invitations to all media including Utusan Malaysia and Berita Harian, and testimonies from staff responsible for the follow-up phone calls. It then evolved into an online war of words and some Malay media, artists and bloggers even threatened to boycott her. The storm was intensified, forcing Shila and her father ND Lala to fly back from China to conduct a press conference to clarify the incident. She was also accused that the concert held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was sponsored by the country’s biggest gambling corporation. Commenting on calls for an apology to Malay media, who have threatened to boycott the singer, both father and daughter felt that there was no logical reason to offer an apology for the defamatory claims, but would not hesitate to do so if it would help to defuse the tension.

2000-2007: Career Expansion

Shila Amzah admitted that she was unable to deal with the camera when she started in the entertainment industry. She had a low level of confidence when facing the camera and did not know how to use it to engage with the audience.
Before Shila Amzah made her debut appearance as a child, her father struggled to get her a chance to showcase her singing. At that time, there were no recording companies that wanted to sign children as recording artists as they did not want to take the risk. So, her father used his own pocket money to produce the first album for Shila. In 2000, Shila's debut album, Terima Kasih Guruku was launched in the presence of Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah - wife of Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Then her talent was slowly recognized by record company, EMI, which Shila eventually signed a contract with. With EMI, she produced the album Sha-Hila with the hit song Yang Teristimewa. After her contract with EMI ended, she joined the "One In A Million" a Malaysian reality singing competition, and ended up as the first runner up.
